MOT Test for Classic Mitsubishi Shogun in Rotherham
Article written by Bush TyresThis Mitsubishi Shogun recently visited Allround Tyres for an MOT after a full restoration.
The Mitsubishi Shogun
The Mitsubishi “Shogun” known here in Britain, a “Pajero” in its domestic market or even a “Montero” in American markets, was born an instant icon. The name Shogun, meaning “General” in Japanese was chosen to replace “Pajero.” The latter having some rather unfortunate translations into Spanish. The car had to be further rebranded in the USA as “Montero”. Launched in 1981 and existing in various forms all the way to 2021 when Mitsubishi finally laid the mighty Shogun name to rest.
This owner’s car was manufactured in 1988, it is a first-generation model featuring the later 2.5L in-line 4 Diesel, one of the largest four-cylinder engines available in any car at the time. The engine was one of the first 4×4 to have an intercooler fitted as standard. All very advanced technology for the time. 1988 also saw the first use of coil link suspension for improved ride comfort and off-road ability.
An incredibly capable off-road vehicle, Mitsubishi’s answer to the more agricultural Land Rovers and Range Rovers of the time. As with these, and the “Jeep” and the “G-Wagon”, the Shogun has its history rooted in Military application. The Shogun’s history can be traced back to the earliest prototypes as early as 1934. The result, a technologically advanced car is just as capable off road as the more familiar British and American cars, with the added advantage of Japanese luxury, reliability, and efficiency. The Shogun instantly became recognisable as the 4×4 of choice for anyone in the know.
This customer’s Shogun was imported in 1999, the combination of coming from warmer climates and the recent restoration work completed will ensure the dreaded rust worm won’t be claiming this one any time soon, as was the fate of many early examples of this model. Allround Tyres hope to be carrying out MOT tests for many more trouble-free years.
MOT- Annual inspections
The UK government first introduced the Ministry of Transport (MOT) test in 1960. Initially checking cars basic safety once they reached 10 years old! Today we are now required to test vehicles once they reach 3 years of age. The test is then carried out annually. The MOT test has faced controversy recently, since the covid pandemic and the rising cost-of-living crisis. Ministers suggested testing should be moved to a new 4+2 arrangement. This has led to great debate in parliament and motoring organisations such as the AA and RAC insist a reduction in the current standard could lead to greater concerns over road safety.
Many owners rely only on the annual test and do not carry out any service or repair work between tests. As well as an annual MOT, advice is that your car should be serviced regularly, as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
