When to have an Air Conditioning Recharge Service

Manufacturers recommend that a cars air con is rechargedevery 2 years. A car or van air conditioner is not checked as part of an MOTtest and re-gassing is not typically included in a vehicle service.
We recommend, it is important to make sure that you include recharging as partof your regular vehicle maintenance routine.

If your AC (aircon) is blowing out warm air or only worksintermittently, an AC recharge can bring back cold air when you need it most onhot days and can also improve your fuel efficiency as there is less strain onthe system and engine. Unpleasant smells coming from the air vents also suggestthat your air con needs some attention.

Air conditioning recharge – the process.

The recharge process is quite simple. It involves removingany old refrigerant gas and oil from the vehicles air conditioning systembefore replacing it with the correct amount of new refrigerant and lubricant,as per your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. A vacuum test is alsoperformed to ensure there are no cracks or damage in the vehicles airconditioning system that could cause the gas to leak out.

The whole recharge process is usually completed within anhour and your vehicle will once again have refreshing cool air on demand. Ourtrained technicians will show you the difference in your air conditioningbefore and after recharge. Vehicle air conditioners that are not rechargedregularly will be less effective and will have to work harder to produce coolair. This puts more strain on the engine and so, uses more fuel. If your airconditioning system has not been recharged in the past two years it willdramatically reduce efficiency.

Use your cars air con in winter too.

An interesting fact about a vehicles air conditioning systemis, it doesn’t just provide cold air inside your car during hot summer monthsit can also be used in winter. Air con systems create dry warm air rather thanthe normal humid air from outside which can clear (de-mist) your windscreenmuch quicker than a vehicles regular demist blowers.
