History of Yokohama tyres
Yokohama Rubber Company was founded on October 13, 1917, in Yokohama, Japan. Initially, the company focused on manufacturing various rubber products, including belts, hoses, and footwear. In 1921, Yokohama began producing its first pneumatic tyres for trucks and passenger cars.
After World War II, Yokohama resumed tyre production and shifted its focus to the growing automobile industry. The 1950s saw significant technological advancements, including:
- 1954: Development of Japan’s first snow tyre, the Y29
- 1955: Introduction of Japan’s first tubeless tyres – the HAMA SAFETY and another model
- 1957: Launch of Japan’s first nylon cord tyre
Yokohama began its international expansion in the 1960s:
- 1969: Establishment of Yokohama Tyre Corporation in the United States, marking the company’s entry into the international market
Throughout its history, Yokohama has been committed to innovation and product development:
- 1983: Became the exclusive tyre supplier for the first Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix
- 1987: Launched GETTAR, Japan’s first radial tyre for motorcycles
- 1992: Introduced the AVID line of tyres
- 1996: Launched the GEOLANDAR line for SUVs and light trucks
- 2005: Introduced the ADVAN line of ultra-high-performance tyres in the U.S.
- 2007: Launched the environmentally friendly Zenvironment line
Yokohama has continued to focus on technological advancements and environmental sustainability with the introduction of the “BluEarth” brand, emphasising environmentally friendly tyres with low rolling resistance, the development of tyres for electric and autonomous vehicles and an expansion of global manufacturing facilities, including plants in the United States.
Yokohama has demonstrated a commitment to environmental responsibility with its implementation of the “Forever Forest” initiative, a global tree-planting program, achievement of zero landfill operations at various manufacturing plants and a focus on producing tyres that meet key environmental criteria: global warming prevention, resource recycling, resource saving, and safety & comfort.
Throughout its history, Yokohama has maintained a strong presence in motorsports, which has contributed to its tyre technology advancements and global recognition as a high-performance tire manufacturer.
