VW Campervan – New Economy Tyres for Stunning 1965 Volksw Transporter
Article written by Bush TyresThis 1965 split screen VW transporter campervan visited our Kings Lynn branch for 2 new front Economy tyres and a pressure check on the rears.
The VW Transporter
This is a First Generation (T1) Split Screen, also known as a “VW bus”, “VW Kombi” or “VW Transporter” depending where in the world you are. Manufactured in 1965 and imported in 2008, this VW is in fantastic condition, with its lowered stance and alloy wheels its ready for a trip to the nearest beach.
The VW Transporter has been a favourite for camper conversions since its launch in 1950. Whenever you see one you half expect it to still see a surfboard strapped to the roof ready for the next adventure. The mechanical underpinnings of these go back to the infamous VW Beetle. With its 1493cc 4 cylinder “flat four” engine being air cooled and fitted in the rear. This being only the second model produced by VW. As such it was given the factory designations of “Type 2”.
The iconic Transporter inspired the design and layout of many modern Vans; it could be regarded as the grandfather to icons such as the Ford Transit and the Citroen H-Van. The Type 2 remained in production all the way until 2013- the VW Factory in Brazil only stopping once safety and emission regulation controls caught up with the now outdated platform.
New Tyres Please - Economy tyres
Having called in to Kings Lynn for a Free Summer holiday vehicle checks, the team spotted the front tyres had seen better days. A pair of new 165/50R15 Economy Tyres were fitted. The rear tyres were also thoroughly inspected, pressure and condition checked to ensure this Camper will make many more safe trips without any issues.
Economy tyres are a great option for most applications. A good quality imported tyre does not always mean a compromise on quality or safety. Bush Tyres select Economy branded tyres from some of the largest tyre manufactures in the world. Not only based in China but also in eastern Europe and Japan. These names may not be as familiar to you here in the UK as others that are more well known. Despite this, many of these are made in the same factories as some of the larger brands.
You are best to think of them as supermarket own brands. And as with those own branded cereals, bread, and beans etc. These Economy options can often be just as good as some of the more expensive branded alternatives but at price to suit all budgets.
Pressure Checks
Pressure checks form a vital part of a tyre’s overall performance and life. Weather economy or premium tyres, any under inflation causes greater rolling resistance that if left unchecked can cause increased wear or even damage to the tyres trough overheating. Equally problematic, an over inflated tyre can cause loss of traction and affect the handling. Tyre life will also be drastically reduced as the middle of the tyre will wear out far quicker than intended.
When checking pressures, it is important to set them to the correct level for the vehicles use; a longer trip to a holiday destination or airport at higher speeds, fully loaded with luggage and passengers would require higher than normal pressures.
