When the German engineering wizards within BMW’s M-Sport division decide to fit a particular tyre to a particular car you can bet your bottom dollar that it wasn’t a decision from Hanz in accounts to save money. When it comes to M-Sport, performance is all that counts.  So when they chose Pirelli’s P-Zero ELECT PNC tyres you know that in their opinion they are without question the best electric vehicle tyres on the market for maximising their vehicles incredible power.

Released in 2021, the 5dr Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from BMW is a full electric vehicle (EV) and represents the latest incarnation of this ever-popular category. Its futuristic design and technology make it one of the current flagships of the BMW electric range.

Similar in length to the more well know BMW X5, its lower profile is more like an X6, and it has a similar footprint to the enormous BMW X7. It features the latest innovations for all electric driving, including automated self-driving options and enhanced connectivity.

The iX is available in xDrive40 or xDrive50 variants, the “50” delivers over 493hp and propels the car from 0-62mph in under 5 seconds. The entire range features the BMW xDrive electronic four-wheel drive system. The range is a claimed 373 miles or 249 in the xDrive40. This is sports car levels of performance from a family sized SAV.

Seen here in 255/50ZR21 size front and rear. The tyres carry the 109Y load and speed index along with the XL marking for Extra Load. The tyre also carries the BMW * star marking. This shows the tyre was developed in direct collaboration with BMW and Pirelli to produce an electric vehicle tyre that will work perfectly with this specific car. This process is referred to as homologation. Pirelli also make an approved winter variation for this car the Winter PZero ELECT is also star marked and XL suitable for this new generation EV.

This electric vehicle tyre carries the ELECT™ marking on the sidewall. This indicates that the tyre was specifically developed for high performance electric and plug-in vehicles, in line with Pirelli’s Perfect Fit Strategy. The tyres also feature the PIRELLI NOISE CANCELLING SYSTEM™ (PNCS). This technology can reduce the noise inside the vehicle by up to 50%. Thanks to a sound absorbing device applied to the inside circumferential wall of the tyre.

When choosing replacement electric vehicle tyres it is important to select tyres built to handle the extra weight of these vehicles. The tyres are also designed with sound reducing designs and often feature these systems to enhance the feeling of luxury when electric driving.

Whilst it is not a legal requirement to fit XL, HL or ELECT marked tyres, it is highly recommended as certain manufacturers will invalidate your warranty should you fit tyres that they have not specified. As the market for EV tyres continues to grow, mid-range and even economy tyre manufacturers are introducing new products to the market. Bush Tyres continue to offer a wide range of tyres to suit all purposes at every price point possible for your EV, Hybrid, Petrol, or Diesel powered vehicles.
