Michelin Pilot Sport On Rare Porsche 996 GT2

Article written by Bush Tyres Michelin Pilot Sport Porsche

Back in the springtime this year these rather distinctive wheels were dropped off at Horncastle for a set of new Michelin Pilot Sport 2 N4. Can you guess what special car these were from……?

Michelin Pilot Sport 2 N4

The Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Tyre seen here in 235/40YR18 front, and probably one of the widest 18” tyres fitted to a Porsche (or any car for that matter), 315/30YR18 rear. Both sizes carry the N4 marking, this demonstrates that the tyre was developed by Michelin in partnership with Porsche in the process known as Homologation for Original Equipment (OE) fitment approval. Had anyone guessed the special car that these wheels and tyres were intended for? The N4 marking, and the unique rear size should be all the clues you needed to guess……. The outstanding 996 generation 911-GT2!

Porsche 911-996 GT2

This car is a rare example of the 996-GT2 with only 1287 cars built through the period from 1997-2006. The 996-generation car was one of the most successful generations of 911 with over 175k units sold globally. Despite this the 993 model the 996 replaced remained amongst the most desirable. This was mainly due to the change to a water-cooled engine away from the traditional air-cooled engines found in the earlier cars.

The GT2 had the most powerful power plant with a Twin-Turbo charged version of the GT3 engine. Producing 476hp, driving only the rear wheels, this car was an instant classic upon launch and had a reputation as a real handful to drive quickly. It was regarded as having near to zero turbo lag due to the new turbos and advanced technology of these engines.

Soon after the Michelin Pilot Sport tyres were fitted and the wheels balanced by our expert tyre technicians, they were reunited with the owner whilst the car was undergoing further preparations to participate in the “Retro Cannonball” rally. Numerous events are held throughout the year, this particular event saw over 190 cars mainly from the last century, 60’s, 70’s and 80s and some 90s cars.

The organisers arranged this drive around Ireland in an event that takes in some of the sights featured in the famous mad-cap Cannonball Movie! The next event is set for Ireland in November and this event will be for an Overland 4×4 adventure. The perfect excuse for a road trip because as well as the sights and incredible roads, drivers get to eat delicious food while staying in some great Hotels along the way, all fully planned and researched by fellow car enthusiasts.

If you are lucky enough to own a classic 911 like this 996-GT2 or any other model of Porsche, Bush tyres can offer a wide range of Original Equipment (OE) tyres including the full Michelin Pilot Sport range for all years and models.

There are options to suit all your driving needs, with tyres often available for same day or next day fitting. Call in to your local branch for the most up to date information or click on the button below to start your Michelin Tyre Sport search.
