The Brilliant MK2 Golf GTI Still Turning Heads

Article written by Bush Tyres Golf Gti

Ladies and Gentlemen – The MK2 Golf GTI

The owner of this iconic VW golf GTI knows and understands the importance of regularly checking their wheel alignment. It’s the regular checks that have helped the owner maximise their fuel economy and reduce overall tyre wear.  This means that this appreciating retro classic still has the power to turn heads and freeze people to the spot. Perhaps Medussa, the snake haired Gorgon which many believe was born from Greek Mythology, was in fact based on the VW Golf GTI. Just a thought!

World Changing Car

The Volkswagen Golf, is there a better example of a class defining car than the VW golf? Since the launch of the original MKI Golf in 1974 the car has dominated the Compact/small family car market. One of the most popular cars ever made, it is now on its 8th generation, to date over 36 million examples have been produced.

This particularly nice 16v Mk2 Golf Gti 5dr hatchback is one of the original  “hot hatches” from 1990, fitted with the later 1.8 litre engine introduced in 1985 the car produces 137hp and can get to speeds of 137mph with a 0-60 time of just over 8 seconds. This might not sound much by today’s standards, but there is something special about the way these cars feel to drive.

There is nothing quite like the sensations you experience when driving of a classic car like this. Many modern cars feature “drive by wire” electronic steering and other driving aids. From traction control and assisted braking systems to more advanced features such as lane assist etc. These all separate the driver from the analogue feeling of really “driving” a car like this. The now classic Golf GTI is a breath of fresh air and a delight to drive in any era.

The Importance of Alignment

To keep this car performing at its best our Bush Tyres Scunthorpe branch carried out a full alignment check and adjustment. The Golf GTI now drives as it should. With a crisp and precise turn in with minimal understeer.

When the Golf arrived it was carefully driven onto the hydraulic ramp from where it was raised off the ground and checked thoroughly for any signs of suspension wear or play. The steering wheel and brake pedal are then locked in position and 3D visualiser targets are mounted to each of the four wheels to measure the cars current alignment settings. Once this initial assessment is completed, our fully trained alignment technicians compare the readings to the original factory specifications.

Some customers may prefer the car set for more sporty/aggressive driving or maybe a more economical/efficiency-based alternative. The costs for the adjustment vary from make and model, the branch will confirm all the options and the cost before then setting your car up perfectly for your needs.

Alignment not only helps your tyres last as long as possible; it also helps to improve your fuel economy. As a result, the costs of any adjustments are recovered over time, along with the added benefit of having your car driving exactly as it should.
