Ford Capri 1969-86 "The car you’ve always promised yourself"
Ford sold over 1.9m Capris over a successful 17-year production run, three generations in total including this customer’s 1980 MkIII.
MkI (69-74) In 1965 a joint German/British design project gave life to the Capri. It was originally intended to be sold as a "Colt" in a nod to the mighty Ford Mustang. A short legal battle with Mitsubishi ended that, the "Capri" was born and first released at the 1969 Brussels Motor show.
MkII (74-78) The Capri was changed forever with the impact of the 1970s oil crisis. Smaller, more efficient engines were offered. Design changes included a shorter bonnet, more room in the cabin, a clamshell hatch and folding seats were added to make the car more practical. It was also offered with an auto box and power assisted steering for the first time.
MkIII (78-86) Internally know as project "Carla", further budget constraints meant this model was essentially a facelifted MkII. Design changes included quad headlights, new wings, bonnet, and changes to the bumpers. The chrome was gone, satin black was now in. This model enjoyed the longest production, well into the new era of "hot hatches" in the late 80s that then dominated the market through to the 90s. We are not likely to see a car like the Capri ever made again. If you can find a well-loved example, you are sure to get a driving experience like no other, owners all seem to love them.

When this Capri was sold it will most likely have had Pirelli or Dunlop tyres fitted from factory. These tyres, although still available through heritage suppliers, they are only produced in limited numbers mainly for concourse and competition purposes. For most owners they don’t represent the best performance or value compared to a modern tyre. The premium tyres remain the best choice for period looks, but if you are driving your classic car more regularly you really can’t beat the performance and value offered by a more modern design tyre.

Something a bit different visited our Spilsby depot earlier in the year. ‘Gasser Champ’ Sean Milsom brought in some loose wheels for new tyres to be fitted to his modified Morris Van ahead of competing at Santa Pod and Melbourne Raceways in the ‘Gasser Circus’ race series.
This 1972 Plymouth ‘Roadrunner’ visited our Horncastle Branch recently for a wheel alignment. This huge American muscle car has a 6.6 litre 402 cubic inch V8. With great power comes great responsibility........
