P Zero Tyres (MOE) – Mercedes Extended Mobility
These P Zero Tyres feature Mercedes Extended Mobility Technology. Shown on the tyre and the label with the MOE marking. This tells us the tyre was developed specifically for use on Mercedes vehicles in close partnership with the tyre manufacturer through a process called Homologation.
The Extended Mobility technology offers drivers temporary extended use of the tyre in situations where pressure is lost. Interestingly, Mercedes decided to compromise on having a full ‘Run Flat’ marking accredited to all their MOE tyres. Not all MOE marked tyres meet the stringent International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) requirements for operating limits under permitted vehicle loads, so they cannot all be branded as ‘run-flat’ tyres legally.
Mercedes-Benz provide high levels of comfort for their owners. This challenge for the engineers was to meet strict run-flat tyre requirements without compromising too much on some models ride comfort. Tyres that meet the ISO requirement are sometimes described as giving an undesirable ride firmness.
Mercedes collaborated with several tyre manufacturers, including Pirelli, to develop a range of lighter-duty temporary extended mobility tyres. These tyres reduce weight, and emissions at the same time increasing boot space by removing the need for a traditional spare yet still providing drivers a “get you home” option.
Operating Limits
In the event of any pressure loss, ISO approved ‘run flats’ provide mobility for up to 50 miles (80 km) at up to 50 mph (80 km/h) for all permitted loads. The MOE tyres allow the same speeds however the MOE only provide temporary extended mobility on a fully loaded vehicle for up to 20 miles (30 km) OR for a lightly loaded vehicle of up to 50 miles (80 km).
As with this particular example fitted to the C Class, some of the tyres are dual-branded, with both the MOExtended MOE and run-flat designations on the sidewall. These meet the requirements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles AND the higher standard run-flat tire limits recognised by the ISO.
Other manufacturers also produce MOE tyres for Mercedes-Benz vehicles include Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Michelin.
