When SR Autobodies need expert tyre fitting, they call upon the team at Spalding depot to assist them with their restoration and maintenance projects. On this occasion, we did not get to see the car these wheels and tyres were intended for but that did not stop the team installing a set of Toyo Proxes 888R. These road legal track tyres from Toyo Tyre UK are perfect for fast road and track driving.
Road legal Track Tyres
It may now be the end of the summer track season for many motor enthusiasts and amateur drivers across the UK but earlier in the season we fitted a set of Toyo Proxes 888R to these wider than standard wheels with 9.5J at the front and 12J rear. For these widths, the tyres are also super-sized, 265/30ZR19 93Y front and 305/30ZR19 102Y rear.
Toyo conceived and developed the 888R with the track firmly in mind, optimising the tyre for supreme dry handling. The tyre provides the driver with enhanced feel through the steering wheel along with a higher sense of stability when pushing hard on the throttle pedal.
The extreme design of the tyre allows for higher cornering speeds and faster lap times. Toyo’s designers had to call upon all their years of combined experience to engineer the Proxes 888R to handle the punishing cornering forces and temperature increases. Ultimately because of this the Toyo Proxes 888R is a shrewd choice of tyre for high performance vehicles.
Frequently asked questions:
Are Toyo 888R Street Legal?
Yes, the Toyo Proxes 888R carries all the legal markings and tread requirements for use on the road. This means you can legally drive your car to the track and save time and hassle swapping wheels around at the track.
Do Track Tyres last as long as normal tyres?
This depends on a number of factors, if you use these tyres on the road, they could last around 5-10k miles or approximately 1 year. You could also potentially use them excessively in one track day and end their life prematurely.
Can I use Semi Slick Track Tyres in the rain?
You can legally use these tyres in the wet. Manufacturers would not recommend using them if you can avoid it. The lack of the normal grooves means the tyres do not disperse water as easily and these tyres can be very tricky to control in standing water or heavy rain. If you drive slowly and pay attention to ruts or uneven road surfaces you should be able to use them if there are no alternatives.
What is the best pressure to use on a set of Toyo Proxes 888R?
The maximum pressure rating (hot) is 40psi, Toyo recommend 32-38psi, but the optimum pressure will vary depending on the individual model of your car and your preference. If you set the cold pressures before driving, you should complete 1-2 hot laps then re-set the pressures once hot for best results. The optimum temperature range for these tyres is 71-105C, they will be less effective in colder weather and before they have been heated.
Do I need a four-wheel alignment?
To get the most out if your new track tyres, a four-wheel alignment would always be recommended. This will improve the overall performance of the tyres by maximising grip and minimising any unwanted steering characteristics. The adjustment will also reduce any premature wear and help your new tyres last as long as possible.
For a fresh set of track tyres, or a second set of wheels for your track car during your winter preparation time, the Toyo Proxes 888R are a smart choice and are available in forty-five sizes from 13-20” in diameter.
