1989 VW Golf Mk2 GTI 16v
The 1980s and early 90s was a great period for performance hatchbacks. By the 1990’s nearly all manufacturers were now producing “hot” versions of their family compact cars. The king of the “hot hatches” was undoubtedly this Mk2 16v VW Golf GTI. With a total of eight generations since the original Mk1 GTI was finally introduced to the UK in RHD format in 1979.
A whole new genre of cars was created, the unbeatable combination of power and practicality.
The VW Golf, the ultimate car for the “school run Grand prix.” Drivers getting a near perfect “one car fits all” solution to safely transport their “little ones” to the school gates before tearing off down the road on the greatest drive home ever!
By the time the Mk2 Golf was launched, it had gained a few pounds over its predecessor with the addition of more safety equipment. To compensate for this, VW upgraded the generous 1.8 Litre normally aspirated engine to 16v. Unlike early 8v engine cars, this 16v variant now produced over 137hp and 153Nm of torque. The car could get to 60mph in under 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 129mph.
The next generation of “Hot Hatches” was born. They were also here to stay, we are now enjoying the eighth generation of the VW Golf GTI, a car with over 45 years of production history and evolution of design.

Tyres and Alignment
As with any vehicle, the importance of good tyres and correct alignment is paramount. For a performance car to drive to the best of its abilities, a correct alignment is crucial for it to deliver the best driving experience.
For a thorough alignment inspection and correction to be performed, firstly the car’s tyres are inspected and set to the correct pressures. Once the pressure check is completed, the car is then raised on the lift and a thorough inspection of all the suspension bushes and joints is carried out with the vehicle both under load, and in the raised position. This allows the technician to detect any “play” or wear in the suspension.
Once these checks are completed the 3D imaging targets are placed accurately and carefully onto the wheels to avoid any damage to the alloys or tyres. Once the initial readings are recorded, the measurements are then compared to the original factory settings.
At this point, the technician can discuss any custom settings the user may prefer. For example, for this Golf, a fast road/track setting may be preferred. Alternatively, a more fuel-efficient setting with low rolling resistance may be best. If tyre wear is a concern, lower tyre wear settings could also be selected to help maximise the life of the tyres.
If you have one of the eight generations of VW Golf, or any other vehicle, Bush Tyres have tyres of all sizes for these and many other models in stock. Alignment checks are recommended by all major manufacturers and other motoring organisations.
