This is a simple guide explaining OE tyre markings and tyre symbols.

Many tyres feature a mark or “tyre symbols” demonstrating the partnership between a vehicle manufacturer and a tyre manufacturer on the design of a tyre that best suits the vehicle.

Tyre Symbols & OE Tyre Markings

This ‘stamp of approval’ confirms the tyre was designed and tested by both the car and tyre manufacturer in the factory process known as homologation.

Generally, it is recommended to have the specific tyre fitment designed for your vehicle, but it is not always essential. Our trained tyre technicians can advise on the best tyres for your car, whether it’s for an OE car manufacturer approved tyre or not. Often different tyre fitments can also cross-over to different vehicles, our team will be able to advise.

VW an OE (Original Equipment) marking used by Volkswagen to indicate tyres specifically engineered for their vehicles.
VO an OE (Original Equipment) marking used by Volvo to indicate tyres specifically engineered for their vehicles.
? Volkswagen, now seen as a + for Volkswagen Electric fitment. Not to be confused with the Michelin Primacy 4+
VOL an OE (Original Equipment) marking used by Volvo to indicate tyres specifically engineered for their vehicles.
SL Rarely found on the tyre, normally on the product labels.
XL Increased ply rating allowing a higher load rating.
HL Currently found on the Lucid Air but will be in mass production soon. Higher load rating than the normal XL tyre but not a commercial tyre. Heavy electric SUVs
C Has a max working pressure of 65PSI
CP Cap Ply, a layer of cord material where individual and adjacent cords run in the direction of the tyre’s rotation. Will be inflated to higher pressure of 84PSI. Often found on motorhomes, not ones built on existing van chassis but ground up motorhomes.

Q Can be a designation for an EV tyre (Michelin/Bridgestone) but is also used for low speed trailer tyres. Max speed of 99MPH.
ACO Contains foam to reduce rolling noise emitted from the tyre.
ACOU The tyre is equipped with special noise-reducing technology
NC Noise Cancelling technology
NCS Noise Cancelling System and is a Pirelli-specific technology for reducing road noise
PNCS Pirelli Noise Cancelling System
SCT Sound Comfort Technology, a Goodyear-specific noise-reduction system

Seal Inside Contains a think layer of sealant, often found on Volkswagen SUV vehicles.
Self Seal Self sealing tyre technology. When an object puntures the tyre casing the loss of pressure is slowed down allowing the vehcile to get to its destination.
H The tyre is designed to carry the full load at a continuos speed up to 130MPH
V The tyre is designed to carry the full load at a continuos speed up to 149MPH
Z The tyre is designed to carry the full load at a continuos speed up to 150+MPH, an older designation. Often seen as ZR with the wheel radius.
W The tyre is designed to carry the full load at a continuos speed up to 168MPH
Y The tyre is designed to carry the full load at a continuos speed up to 186MPH
(Y) The tyre is designed to carry the full load at a continuos speed up to 186MPH+ Commonly found on ultra ultra high performance tyres
